Hemorrhoids can be a real pain in the A-S, literally and figuratively!
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that can occur in the rectum or around the anus.
Hemorrhoids are often triggered by:
Pregnancy
Prolonged periods of sitting
Heavy lifting with poor mechanics/breath holding
Chronic Constipation
Signs and symptoms can include pain, bleeding with defecation, itching or palpable lumps/bumps around the anus.
Treatment should often start by having a consultation with a colorectal doctor who can evaluate the issue and determine the next best steps. Sometimes this includes injections to shrink and reduce the inflamed hemorrhoids, medications, lifestyle modifications and less commonly, surgery. SITS baths, adequate fiber, good hydration and limited periods of sitting can also be important to promote healing. Don't strain to poop!
If you are often straining to defecate, this can indicate pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and physical therapy can be a great, conservative option. If you like to lift weights or have a job that involves heavy/repetitive lifting, learning correct breathing mechanics/lifting techniques can also be beneficial.
