Do men have pelvic floor issues? YES, they sure do!
Just like women, men do in fact have a pelvic floor and may be confronted with a plethora of pelvic health issues.
Pelvic floor weakness may result in urinary or fecal incontinence. Erectile dysfunction is common and can be due to weakness and/or muscle tension. Tight pelvic floor muscles can manifest as pelvic pain, similar to what women might experience. This pain might be felt in the region of the genitalia, abdomen, hips/pelvis or low back. Urinary and bowel issues are common and can also be signs of pelvic floor dysfunction.
Men that have received a diagnosis of prostate cancer will often undergo surgery to remove the prostate. Following surgery, many men will experience some degree of incontinence. They will require pelvic floor muscle training to restore bladder control. Seeing a PT prior to surgery can be quite beneficial.
If internal assessment is recommended, this is performed rectally.
Men who experience urinary/bowel/sexual health issues should first consider seeing a Urologist. If physical therapy is recommended, finding a PT who has experience working with men is imperative.
Although at this time, HER Body PT focuses on the care of women, there are many great options throughout the Triangle for men!
